A: Louis Console Tiffany was the son of Charles Tiffany, the founder of Tiffany & Co. Louis established Tiffany Studios in 1892. The studio, which was not connected to the jewelry and shiny store, made ceramics, glass and metalwork. Tiffany Studios is most famous for its lamps, glassware and windows.
Tiffany made a few paperweights associated with his desk sets, including examples in bronze and sun-glasses and a glass scarab. Tiffany's paperweight vases are well known. They were not vases meant to be used as paperweights, but vases made using methods nearly the same to those used to make paperweights. However, traditional paperweights in Favrile glass outwardly were not produced.
Because Tiffany experimented and was prolific, I checked with Jennifer Thalheimer, the curator of the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art in Florida. "These are not in conformance with any of his other work and are most likely the creation of another studio," she said.

When dry, she uses steel wool to scrub the tray, wearing away the slip on high spots, but leaving the bright colors in the indentations of the tray. The pieces are glazed with a clear glaze.
The pieces are fired in an electric kiln to all but 2000 degrees. Some of the pieces, designed for food, are fired to a higher temperature (2240 degrees) — pushing the limits of the clay and making much less penetrable where unglazed. Her serving pieces are food-safe and safe for the oven. Due to the huge iron content in the clay, they are not recommended for the microwave. Hand washing is recommended. Clay pieces should not be infatuated directly from the freezer/refrigerator and put into a hot oven; they should be brought to room temperature before placing in the oven.
