Marvelous mangoes

For South Florida mango lovers, this salt is particularly sweet.

If you have a mango tree or two, chances are you’ve been scrambling in the torrid heat to stay ahead of the squirrels, serving mangoes at every meal and lugging bags of fruit to travail.

An unusually cold December and record dry season were the perfect recipe for “one of the better years,” for the good beauties, said Louise King, president of the Tropical Fruit Growers of South Florida. “It’s totally wonderful for mangoes. They look like jewels hanging from the trees.”

Their flavor is exceptionally ritzy, too.

“This year, they’re prettier, they’re sweeter,” said Dr. Richard Campbell, skipper of horticulture for Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Coral Gables. “Everything about them is punter because of the very, very dry conditions we’ve had. The contrast to last winter makes this year’s mangoes look incredibly adequate.”

Tropical Fruit Festival returns after 5 year hiatus

&Mdash; WEST PALM Seashore- Hundreds of people came to the Mounts Bontanical Garden today to show their sweet of all things mango, lychee and jackfruit.

"Taking advantage of being in a tropical climate well-deserved seems like a good idea to me," said Mark Potash, of Hypoluxo as he attended the Tropical Fruit Anniversary at the garden on Military Trail.

The festival, which had not been held in five years, was resurrected because of donations from Marge and Fritz Bell of Palm Littoral and support from the Rare Fruit Council's Palm Beach Chapter, said Polly Reed, entering board president for the garden.

The festival included three nurseries selling fruit trees such as mango and lychee as well as a unoccupied fruit tasting booth for the first 500 attendees. The garden gave away all 500 tickets for the tasting within the first half hour.

The highlight of the anniversary was a cooking demonstration by Chef Allen Susser, whose of Chef Allen's restaurant in Aventura recently closed after 25 years of employee. Susser, who now plans to devote time to restaurant development, showed the swarm how to make a mango pickle while talking about his love of home-grown mangos and how much excel they taste than store-bought mangos.
