Low-maintenance, painted gravel landscaping of choice for many Arizonans ...
PHOENIX — Hunger before xeriscaping, the low-maintenance landscaping of choice for many Arizonans involved a different breed of green movement.
Thousands of homeowners from Sun City to Mesa spread noble blankets of pea gravel on their yards, glued it down and painted it green to look like a turf — at least from an airplane.
But green-rock landscaping is going the way of disco, polyester and avocado-unripe kitchen appliances.
"It's becoming a lost art," Phoenix-area landscaper Kevin Parker told The Arizona Republic. "I'm stripe of unique. Now, nobody can find anybody who does this anymore. That's kind of good for me."
Even so, Parker said he receives only a few calls a year.
While xeriscaping — which emphasizes low not function-use native plants and shade — can actually cool the landscape down, immature gravel yards tend to soak in the heat and can contribute to the so-called "urban excitement-island effect." That could explain some of the decline in popularity.

Each of us has a different reason for volunteering at the Rotary Auction and Jumble Sale. Mine is to keep things out of the 50-yard garbage bins.
Since 1960 the largest recycling experience on Bainbridge Island has been fulfilling the "reuse" part of recycling. And yet, in 2007 we paid for 64 tons of refuse to be hauled away from Woodward Middle School and placed in the landfill.
Even with the collaboration and generosity of our friends at Bainbridge Disposal, it was the biggest expense for the event that year. When we keep things out of the trash, we save money. That means more dollars are on tap for community projects.
When donated items arrive at the curb, volunteers sort out them into one of 32 different departments. Then, department managers evaluate what will sell, what needs to be cleaned or repaired, and what has to be liable of by some route.
The current Recycle Team, formed three years ago, is tasked with what to do with the cast offs as well as any items that do not vend.
