Trees, India, focus of photo exhibit at library
The industry of two distinct photographers will hang in the Collingwood Public Library this summer.
Sheila Reisman's Honouring the People and Places of India tells a gest and was photographed during her trip there two years ago.
She describes looking down railroad tracks and seeing an array of women wearing colourful saris.
"It's an unimaginable country," said Reisman. "Even though there's severe poverty, they look after each other."
She says she was so impressed with the people who animate there she was inspired to bring a part of the country back to Canada through her photography.
"I wanted to expose people to what India is all about – there's such nadir thoroughly, and feeling, and emotion in that country."
Reisman says the two Toronto-based artists chose their collections carefully so they would not be in conduct competition.
While Reisman's work is a colourful depiction of the people and places in India, Mirella Mossanen's collections are starless and white photographs of trees and flowers, which show texture and detail.
'Boreal Birch' grows interest in both art, science
As part of its uninterrupted art and science collaborations, the Pratt Museum periodically invites artists to learn from art and create art on subjects such as plankton or the tides. This fall, the museum asks artists to pursue that exploration in connecting art and archaeology with the theme of "Who Lived Here?"
A show that opened last week at the Pratt, "Boreal Birch: Art and Realm in the Northern Forest," brings together science and art more directly. In a talk last Thursday ceaselessly and at the First Friday opening, University of Alaska Fairbanks graduate student Kimberly Maher spoke front and center with artists Margo Klass and Kesler Woodward. Photographer Barry McWayne, who died in August 2010, was represented by his helpmeet, Dorli McWayne.
"People just feel really disconnected from what scientists are doing," Maher said at last Thursday's talk. "I see this as an time — and to learn something new about birch."
Klass, Woodward and McWayne sought out Maher three years ago when they put together a proposition for the Pratt show. The Fairbanks artists wanted to examine the many aspects of birch and looked for a scientist studying birch trees to course out their team. Asking around at UAF, the same name kept coming up.
