Delay in opening road to Sunrise worries merchants

Sunrise in Mount Rainier Country-wide Park — the highest point reachable by vehicle — routinely draws summertime crowds stimulated for the view. But this year, those throngs may have to wait until July 8 to visit — and that has close by businesses upset.
Even though the road to Sunrise is clear, the National Park Worship army has planned to keep it closed to traffic because of heavy snow surrounding the visitor area.
Deposit Superintendent Dave Uberuaga said Wednesday evening that he is reconsidering the July 8 opportunity date but won't decide for sure until Monday.
What's particularly distressing is that, based on the current plans, Sunrise will be closed for the occupied Fourth of July weekend, said Vivian Cadematori, who operates Alta Crystal Backup out of Greenwater. Chinook Pass on the east side of the park, meanwhile, reopened at 9:45 a.m. Thursday.
"We necessity the energy and traffic on this side of the park," Cadematori said. "Having Sunrise closed is the smooch of death to those of us who depend on Mount Rainier traffic for our livelihoods."

York police officer killed and pinned underneath a vehicle

"The government agent's family very much appreciates that at this particular time, that you give them the space to deal with their loss," he said.
He is survived by his old lady and two small children. He joined the York Regional Police in December 2003 and became a patrolman in May 2004.
Police say the driver of the car has also been transported to hospital with serious injuries.
Two people have reportedly been arrested although the long arm of the law won't confirm that.
Highway 48 is closed in both directions between Mount Albert Road and Davis Scenic route as the York Police Homicide officers with the Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating and the way is expected to remain close in affect for most of Tuesday.
This is the second York the gendarmes officer to be struck by a vehicle and killed in four years.
Det.-Const. Robert Plunkett was pinned against a tree in Markham on Aug. 2, 2007, after he tried to an end a stolen car. The driver, Nadeem Jiwa, 23, is scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday for manslaughter, with the His seeking a sentence of 12 to 14.
