Seekonk voters set FY12 budget
21.06.11
SEEKONK - The Community of Seekonk will enter Fiscal Year 2012 with a total operating budget of sternly $41.5 million after voters approved the matter at Monday night’s annual burgh meeting.
Town clerk Jan Parker said more than 400 town voters gathered basically the high school auditorium for the meeting, which lasted about four and a half hours. The budget came before the council after reports were delivered by finance committee chairwoman Karen Perkins, kindergarten committee chairman Mitchell Vieira and capital improvement committee chairman David Bowden. The largeness of the one-hour budget discussion focused on a request first motioned by Mr. Vieira to along $82,116 of Free Cash to the education portion of the budget.
School Supt. Maddie Meyer said this move would consideration the school department to avoid the reduction of one middle school social studies doctor and re-institute $50,000 of technology funds slated to be cut.
Not everyone was on board with the suggestion.
Money improvement committee member Beverly Hart said the town has needs aside from the budget, such as infrastructure improvements. Last to the meeting, every voter was given a handout from the CIC showing that capital expenditure requests are expected to leave out sharply in coming years, including more than $1.2 million in Fiscal year 2015. Ms. Hart argued some of this funding may beggary to come from the Free Cash account, which sat at roughly $386,000 when the meeting began.
