Norwich family firm's tractors have global appeal

Today, the dealing, which is celebrating its 80th anniversary, employs about 175 staff and has expanded from its original uncomfortable premises in King Street, Norwich, to cover a large swathe of Norfolk and Suffolk.

The subject, founded by visionary agricultural engineer Ben Burgess in 1931, is headed by his grandson, Ben Turner. And his son, also Ben, is also fully twisted in the company, which moved to a purpose-built site in Europa Way, Martineau Lane, almost facing County Hall and was officially opened in November 1992.

Ben Burgess, MBE, who died grey 98 in November 2000, started the Crude Oil Tractor Cultivation Entourage with Â£1,000 of share capital with two partners. Then diesel was a somewhat dirty brief conversation for tractors. Based on the familyâs farm at Howe, near Poringland, he had entranced on the Norfolk agency for Marshall Crude Oil Tractors but it was a tough sell to transmogrify farmers from real horse power.

They had enough money to buy an 18/30hp Marshall, bulldoze and a Ransomeâs Dauntless cultivator, which was demonstrated publicly on September 12, 1931 in a stubble field off the Norwich to Brooke route by The Dove pub. Ploughing downhill at 3mph, regarded by some farmers as âunnaturalâ, the powerâs only model of diesel tractor impressed â despite its sacrifice tag of about Â£300.

IH 16 ft field cultivator with 2 ft end folds. It isn't dulcet with punctilious face but this constituent works from A to Z well. The end folds are extended in photos however I have been using it with a 75 HP tractor which does a solid job with the predominant 12 foot subdivision but will not tug the full compass. You should have a 90 HP or higher tractor for the 16 ft calibre. This also has a hitchhiker dash harrow on the back.
