Which One to Choose? Take note of your yard, and take a look at the roots ...

Tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009) is the Naples Orchid Society’s annual orchid sale and many of you will be taking home plants you have never grown — or at least types of a plant you have never grown. When picking out an orchid for your very own, there are many points you should consider carefully so that you and your new plant will be happy.

The first thing to think about is what kind of orchid you want to take home. Do you have other orchids and plants? Where will this one be placed: in your home or yard? There are many kinds of orchids — terrestrials, which are planted in the ground, as well as those that live in trees, or pots. Some like shade (Phalaenopsis) and some like a lot of sun while others are happy with in-between: lots of eastern sun in the morning and shade when it gets really hot at noon and after.

Some orchids like to be watered every day or even several times a day — Vandas and Ascosendas — and some take water once a week or even less. Before you even walk out, it’s a good time to those who are selling the orchids if you are unsure about the care needed for a specific orchid.

Prince Charles calls for more protection for British wild flowers

In a new report, The Ghost Orchid Declaration, Plantlife said intensive farming, climate change, development and loss of habitat like managed woodland have caused a decline in well known flowers like bluebells and cow slip. More rare flowers like meadow clary, starved wood-sedge and spiked star-of-bethlehem, seldom survive.

The charity said the Government is neglecting wild flowers in its environmental policy in favour of animals that win more public compassion.

The Prince of Wales, who is patron of Plantlife and recently planted his own wildflower meadow at Highgrove, called for greater protection for wild plants.

"There is no time to lose and I hope and pray that the loss of the ghost orchid will be the wake up call that we so urgently need," he said.

Plantlife pointed out that none of the Government funding for research into biodiversity in the last two years went towards plants and fungi. Also just three per cent of subsidies paid out to farmers for protecting wildlife in England went towards schemes that encourage farmland flowers.

How do I get my orchid plant to reflower?

I have a Phalaenopsis orchid plant that was doing remarkably well until recently when all the flowers started falling off. I think I overwatered it and it also got positively hot over the weekend. But anyways, what do I need to do to get the flowers to grow back? Should I spiffy the ends off or trim down to the stem? Will they ever grow back?

Most nurseries and garden centres will family fertilisers for orchids. There are two kinds, one kind to stimulate crop and the other is formulated to stimulate flowering. It has a higher proportion of potassium.

If you overwater it you will get a lot of yellow leaves and a deranged looking plant. Most orchid potting mixes have a high content of bark and are very scratchy, the water will generally go straight through.

After a few years in the same pot its a good concept to repot the orchid and this will sometime stimulate more flowers.
