Checkout Lane: Tips on growing green grass
30.08.10
The grass doesn’t have to be greener on the other side of the hold at bay.
Learning about the types of grass seed can help you grow a luscious lawn that will make your neighbors leafy with envy.
With cooler temperatures and more rain, late summer and early seizure are the best times for seeding a lawn, said Jason Klemp, green care manager at Barcellos and Kane Landscape Management in Hingham, Come together.
There are three main types of seed: Kentucky bluegrass, rye and fescue.
Bluegrass is perhaps the most desirable sympathetic of grass, Klemp said. It’s the type of grass grown at Fenway Park.
The copious in blue hue and hardiness of bluegrass make it aesthetically pleasing and practical.
“An athletic contestants mix is an excellent choice for a family,” said Lee Doucette, sales associate for South Shore Loam and Mulch. “It’s made to be hand-me-down, not just viewed.”
Bluegrass is great for sunny spots, Klemp said, and takes an common of 21 to 31 days to grow.

Now is the ideal time for lawn improvement

The choosing of the best method to use for improving a lawn should be governed by diagnosing the problem(s) that caused the existing sward to fail. For example, a viable option for rejuvenating a lawn that is thinning because turfgrass plants are with one foot in the grave because of old age, harsh environmental conditions or certain diseases and insects, is to over-seed with improved cultivars of the existing turfgrass species using a slice-seeder. The with greatest satisfaction seed germination and grass seedling establishment occurs when the seed is in direct contact with the soil but exposed to the sun. A slice-seeder (also known as a gash-seeder) uses vertical cutting blades to slice open the consistent layer allowing seed to be deposited directly onto the exposed soil. Remember, a slice-seeder is not a seed auger; the cutting depth should be adjusted so seed falls onto the soil surface and is not buried.
If the turf has few existing grass plants and large open areas that are occupied by perennial weeds, or if the petition is to switch to a completely different turfgrass species, renovation might be the best opportunity. One renovation method involves killing the weeds and existing grass using a non-discriminative, non-residual, postemergent herbicide such as glyphosate (e.g. Roundup). Keep three things in mind: the plants must be tonic and growing to be killed, so irrigation might be required before the application; herbicides take time to write 'finis' to plants, so the application(s) should be made very soon; and a single application will seldom kill all plants, so multiple applications might be required, which also affects the green improvement timeline. After the herbicide activity is complete, a slice-seeder should be old to deposit seed onto the soil. Typically, the dead grass or weeds act just like straw in maintaining sludge moisture, so straw is not required.
